And for many of us parents, understanding the Portuguese school system is a major concern. I designed this quick guide to help break down the essential aspects of education in Portugal, helping you make informed choices for your child's educational future, well before you arrive.

In January 2020, just before the world shifted, we packed up our life in California and moved to Lisbon. Not because everything was ready, but because we decided to become ready.
Today we live what once felt like a far off dream: unhurried mornings with our children, and work that energizes instead of drains. Our children are multilingual, globally minded, and anchored in the belief that pursuing what feels aligned is normal, not risky.

Not with dramatic leaps or risk it all moves, but with aligned decisions, a practical relocation strategy, and a roadmap that honors both your stability and your freedom.
Overview of the education system
School attendance is mandatory by the government of Portugal, from ages 6 to 18, and consists of four main levels.
School options for expat families
- Free and accessible.
- Follows the national Portuguese curriculum and is rooted in the local culture.
- Secular education, with many schools offering optional Catholic moral education.
- Portuguese is the primary language, with English introduced in 3rd grade.
- Mandated by the government to provide Portuguese as a Non Native Language (PLNM), a government supported program that helps students who do not speak Portuguese integrate through specialized language instruction and cultural adaptation support.
- Follows the national Portuguese curriculum but offers smaller class sizes.
- Portuguese is the main language of instruction, though some schools provide bilingual instruction (Portuguese and English, or Portuguese and French).
- Some are Catholic or Christian affiliated, but most are secular.
- Incorporates alternative teaching methodologies like Montessori, Waldorf, and many other pedagogies.
- Admission can be competitive and typically requires interviews and waiting lists. Quality varies vastly by school.
- Offer curriculums such as British (IGCSE, A Levels), US curriculums (AP, SAT), IB, French Baccalaureate, and German Abitur, to name a few.
- English is the main language of instruction, but this depends on the school.
- Most are secular, but some have Catholic values. Many offer bilingual or trilingual education, for example English, Portuguese, and French.
- Teachers are often native English speakers with international teaching qualifications.
- Less integration into Portuguese culture and language.
Top 3 challenges for parents
Language Barrier and Integration
Many parents worry about their children adapting to Portuguese language instruction. While international schools offer English programs, public schools provide Portuguese as a Non Native Language (PLNM) support, and many private Portuguese schools also provide additional support, although this varies widely between schools and really depends on so many factors, between classroom sizes, extra teaching support, and the overall school culture and acceptance of non native Portuguese speakers.
Parents should really consider how much cultural and linguistic immersion they want for their children, and therefore assess the level of bilingual support needed along with the child's ability to adjust. It is always best to get a chance to do a live, in person tour and ask about the student body demographics and linguistic background of the school. Parents, do your best to ask about the PLNM program and allow the teachers to share how they support students in need. All of this you can also do virtually, in case you are unable to make a live visit. Ask to connect with other parents through the school to get additional perspective.
School Availability and Enrollment
Public school enrollment is based on neighborhood residence, with priority given to students residing in the immediate area first. Spots can be limited depending on the school's availability. The best way to know about these schools is to try to visit in person and identify an administrator who might be able to discuss the process with you. If you are not able to come in person, I can help you identify some local public schools and make an introduction for you. Be sure to book a School Strategy Session (90 minutes). International schools and some private Portuguese schools have competitive enrollment processes and long waiting lists, so early application is key. Research deadlines and required documentation in advance.
Curriculum and Long Term Goals
Public schools follow the Portuguese National Curriculum strictly, which may differ from the standards your family knows from home. Find out more by visiting the national school ranking page at publico.pt/ranking-escolas.
Parents considering a return to the US or another country should assess whether an IB, British, or American curriculum would better align with future academic goals.
Enrollment and required documents
Enrollment typically follows these deadlines for registration into the upcoming school year, but many schools require your application and admission fees to hold your child's spot much earlier.
