From California Mom to Portugal Expat

Years ago, I was in the same place as many of you — juggling a career that didn't fulfill me, raising three young children, and feeling quietly stuck in a life that looked successful on the outside but didn't feel like mine on the inside.

I craved more time, more freedom, more purpose — but I couldn't see how to make it possible without disrupting everything I'd worked so hard to build.

I kept telling myself I'd make a change one day: when things felt calmer, when the kids were older, when we'd saved more, when timing aligned. What I didn't realize was that waiting was the thing pulling me further away from the life I actually wanted.

We were actively missing it."

Then Portugal Happened

A family holiday. Nothing dramatic. Just ordinary moments that revealed something extraordinary.

One quiet afternoon on a sunlit terrace, watching my kids laugh without rush, without deadlines or traffic or lunch-box chaos, I felt something I hadn't felt in far too long: lightness, connection, joy without pressure.

And in that moment, I realized something I couldn't unsee: we weren't waiting for our perfect life. We were actively missing it. That moment didn't give me a fully formed plan. It gave me permission. A reminder that clarity doesn't come first — action creates clarity.

What I Didn't Have (Yet)

I didn't have a roadmap. I didn't have a relocation strategy. I didn't have location-independent income. I didn't have six-figure savings.

But I had one truth that changed everything: the cost of not changing had become greater than the risk of trying.

So we began small — and differently. I reshaped my work to match my values. I renegotiated how I earned. I explored ways to generate income without being tied to one location. I leveraged our real estate assets. I built flexible revenue streams.

I shifted from holding it all together to consciously designing what I wanted my children to witness.

January 2020: The Move

January 2020. Just before the world shifted. We packed up our life in California and moved to Lisbon.

Not because everything was ready, but because we decided to become ready.

Today we live what once felt like a far-off dream: unhurried mornings with our children, work that energizes instead of drains, time autonomy and location freedom that allowed early "work-optional" living.

Our children are multilingual, globally minded, and anchored in the belief that pursuing what feels aligned is normal, not risky.

I didn't abandon a life. I built a more intentional one.

And Now, I Help Other Families Do the Same

As the CEO and Founder of Families Go Abroad™ – Portugal, I guide families who are ready to stop waiting and start building the life they've been imagining.

Not with dramatic leaps. Not with risk-it-all moves. But with aligned decisions, practical Portugal relocation strategy, and a roadmap that honors both your stability and your freedom.

Your freedom isn't a distant ideal. It's a decision backed by strategy. I made that decision on a terrace in Portugal.

What moment will unlock yours?
