About Me: From California to Portugal

Years ago, I was in the same place as many of you — juggling a career that didn't fulfill me, raising three young children, and feeling quietly stuck in a life that looked successful on the outside… but didn't feel like mine on the inside.

Then came a family holiday to Portugal. One quiet afternoon on a sunlit terrace, watching my kids laugh without rush, something shifted: we weren't waiting for our perfect life — we were actively missing it.

In January 2020, we moved from California to Lisbon — not because everything was ready, but because we decided to become ready.

Your 12-Month Portugal Roadmap

Month 1–2

Research & Commit

Choose your visa type, verify income eligibility, engage an immigration lawyer, and schedule your consulate appointment immediately.

  • Choose your visa pathway: D7 (passive/retirement income), D8 (digital nomad / remote work), or D2 (entrepreneur). Each has different income thresholds and proof requirements.
  • Calculate income requirements: D7 minimum is roughly the Portuguese minimum wage (~€870/month) for the main applicant, plus 50% for a spouse and 30% per child. D8 thresholds are higher (~4× minimum wage).
  • Engage a Portuguese immigration lawyer — don't skip this. They catch errors before consulates do.
  • Schedule your consulate appointment NOW — appointments at US consulates can be booked 2–4 months out. This is the single most time-sensitive step.
  • Family alignment: agree on timing, school year cutover, work transitions, and what you're willing to leave behind.
Month 3–4

Build Your Financial Base

Establish passive or remote income that meets D7/D8 thresholds, open international banking, and begin consolidating finances.

  • Establish qualifying income: document remote work contracts, rental income, dividends, or pension that meets your visa's threshold for at least 6–12 months of history.
  • Open international banking: Wise (multi-currency), Mercury or Relay (US business), and a Portuguese bank account once you have a NIF.
  • Get your NIF (Portuguese tax number) through a fiscal representative — you can do this remotely before arrival.
  • Consolidate debt and savings: aim for 2–3 months of Portuguese living expenses in reserve (€10K–€20K for a family of four).
  • Tax planning: review NHR/IFICI eligibility, US-Portugal tax treaty implications, and exit-state tax exposure (especially CA residents).
Month 5–7

Gather Documents

FBI background check, apostilles, translations, proof of income, NIF registration — the document phase is the most time-intensive.

  • FBI background check via the Identity History Summary process — currently 8–12 weeks. Apply early; this is the bottleneck for most families.
  • Apostille every official document: birth certificates, marriage certificate, FBI check, and any court documents. Apostille is done at the state level.
  • Certified Portuguese translations for all apostilled documents. Use a translator certified by the Portuguese consulate.
  • Proof of income: 6–12 months of bank statements, recent tax returns, employer letter (for D8), or asset statements (for D7).
  • Health insurance: private policy that covers Portugal for the first year — required for visa approval.
  • Housing proof: 12-month lease agreement OR property purchase deed.
Month 8–10

Visa & Housing

Submit visa application, research neighborhoods, secure housing remotely, and research schools in your target area.

  • Submit visa application at your scheduled consulate appointment. Bring originals + copies of every document.
  • Research neighborhoods based on family priorities: Lisbon (urban, international schools), Cascais/Estoril (coastal, family-friendly), Porto (cheaper, less English), Algarve (sun, retiree-heavy), Sintra (nature, smaller schools).
  • Secure housing remotely: work with a local agent or coach. Expect to put down 2–3 months rent + 1 month deposit.
  • School research: Portuguese public (free, Portuguese-language), bilingual public (rare, lottery-based), private international (€8K–€25K/year). Application windows close early.
  • Visa typically approved 2–4 months after submission — start preparing for arrival before approval lands.
Month 11–12

Move & Settle

Arrive, register at AIMA, enroll kids in school, set up NHR/IFICI tax status, and begin building your community.

  • Arrive in Portugal with your visa stamped. You have 4 months to register at AIMA for your residence permit.
  • AIMA appointment: book the moment you have a Portuguese address. Wait times can be long — expect 2–6 months for the appointment itself.
  • Enroll children in school — bring birth certificates, vaccination records, and previous school transcripts (translated).
  • Apply for NHR/IFICI tax status by March 31 of the year following your arrival. Don't miss the deadline.
  • Register with SNS (public health system) at your local health center once you have a residence card.
  • Build community: join expat groups, neighborhood associations, school parent committees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about moving your family to Portugal.

No — you can live comfortably in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve speaking only English. Most professionals, doctors, and service providers speak English. Learning Portuguese is encouraged but not required to get started.
Most American families use the D7 Passive Income Visa (retirement income, rental income) or the D8 Digital Nomad Visa (remote work). The D2 Entrepreneur Visa is best if you're starting a business. I walk you through all options in detail in my checklist and coaching sessions.
Yes — Portuguese public schools are free and accept foreign children. Some public schools even offer bilingual English programs. Many expat families combine public school with private tutoring, or choose private international schools depending on budget and location.
Relocation costs vary widely, but plan for €3,000–€8,000 in moving and legal fees, plus 2–3 months of living expenses in reserve. Monthly living costs for a family of four in Lisbon typically run €3,500–€5,500 including rent. Porto and smaller cities are significantly less.
Typically 6–12 months from start to arrival. The D7 visa process itself takes 2–4 months after your consulate appointment, but gathering documents (especially the FBI background check) can take 3–5 months. Start as early as possible.
